The Hero with a Thousand Faces, by Joseph Campbell

The Hero with a Thousand Faces, by Joseph Campbell

This book is much less interesting than I thought it would be. Every chapter is a brief summary of many myths related to the idea. Most of the connection and larger arc of these myths is actually left to the reader to infer. You can certainly infer something, but it is definitely not as profound as you often hear that this book is. Verdict: A decent summary of interesting commonalities in myth, but I could leave it.

The massive amount of Freudian psychology the book references is amazing. It reminds me of one of my favourite quotes: "Psychoanalysis is itself the illness of which it purports to be the cure." - Karl Kraus

Cato University 2009

I've been to two Cato University events and they were two of the best things I've done. I strongly recommend that you check them out if you can. Here's a link to the information site:

On June 26-31 in Rancho Bernardo, California, Cato University will bring together outstanding faculty and participants from across the country to discuss how the state has expanded during times of crises; the threats to liberty, privacy, and independence, as the rush for government-imposed solutions (and, hence, power) increases in pace; and, what can be done to restrain – or reverse – its growth.

This year’s topic: Economic Crisis, War, and the Rise of the State.
