The Iliad, by Homer, translated by Robert Fitzgerald

The Iliad, by Homer, translated by Robert Fitzgerald

I am amazed that the Iliad was not about what I thought it was about. I was expecting a long story of the nine year Trojan War culminating in the story of the Trojan Horse and everyone departing to return home. Instead, we start in the ninth year and cover a few week period where Achilles is angry at Agamemnon, culminating in the return of Hektor's corpse after Achilles kills him in retribution. Unexpected, yet great.

The other thing I'm very surprised about is how much like D&D players the Greeks are: every time they kill anyone, they jump on them to take their stuff. At least D&D adventurers wait until the battle is over...
